A parent came to talk to us about his project naming streets in Takoradi. We learned about how process that they have gone through to work with leaders in Takoradi to name the streets. They even work with Google Maps to make sure the street names get added there! We can't take for granted all the work that goes into city planning!
Building conceptual understanding of multiplication...Ms. Candy needs help designing boxes to sells her chocolates in. She sells the candies in rectangular boxes - with only one layer of chocolates in each box. She doesn't want her beautiful chocolates to get squished! Help Ms. Candy design her boxes. She would like a variety of sizes, to satisfy the customers' needs. She would like all the designs possible to sell her chocolates in boxes of 1 - 36 chocolates. Making observations about arrays...
3B has made great connections between area and perimeter and how they relate to our unit of inquiry: How We Organize Ourselves: City Systems!
We drew a grid on our land, creating square decimeters. We found the perimeter of our city, in decimeters. We then cut out rectangles to scale on centimeter grid paper. Each student created his/her own blueprint, creating suggestions for the zoning of our city (Industrial Zone, Commercial Zone, Residential Zone, Public Spaces). We found the total area of each zone, and made sure it added up to the total area of our city. Then, as a class, we graphed the areas of our zones. We found the average range of area for each zone. We then created new blueprints - rezoning the city with the agreed upon areas in mind. Finally, we presented our blueprints and voted on one to zone our 3B city! This process was very engaging, and it really helped build the students' conceptual understanding of both perimeter and area. Not to mention, they learned ways we can use both measurements in real life! 3B walked across the street last week, to The Wheel Story House. This is a space constructed primarily out of found and recycled items. We were gathering ideas about how we can reuse and recycle materials to construct our class city!
Choosing skills to work...In our classroom, we have a "Skills Wall". At the beginning of each new unit of inquiry, we discuss which skills we will be working on and add those skills to our wall. At Genius Hour, students are asked to look at the "Skills Wall" and choose two skills they would like to improve during this genius hour inquiry.
Almost ready to research! Students then brainstormed different sources they could use to research and developed a step-by-step plan of their actions on a flow chart. Next week, we will be ready to dig into our genius hour inquiries!!!! |
