Task: Choose either the physical changes experiment (What happens when heat is applied to chocolate?) or the chemical changes experiment (What happens when vinegar is mixed with baking soda?). Formulate a new testable question from this experiment. What if....? Create a new experiment that tests that question. Complete a lab report about your experiment!

Today, we read a Grade 3 students' lab report from another school. I did not explain the procedure, I simply asked the students to read the procedure and follow the steps. Then, we thought about what this student did well and what this student could have done better. We are trying to create criteria for a great lab repot, in preparation for our summative task later this week! This is our last week of our current unit of inquiry: How the World Works. As we finish this unit, I wanted to get into the minds of the 3B students. These are the words that come to mind most often to 3B when they think: What is science? The larger the word, the more often it was shared by a student. When I look at this word map, I make the following observations:
Yesterday the elementary school celebrated science and inquiry through a Science Fair. I was so happy to see such inquiring minds and ownership over their investigations! We had been working really hard on our science projects at Science Club (after school activity). Check out our projects! We took our investigation of matter out into the world! We visited Happy Art Academy to learn more about the natural material: clay. We thought about:
We discussed the physical and chemical changes clay can go through. And we got to try making some physical changes to the clay! Today we explored chemical changes in matter. Question: What happens when vinegar is mixed with baking soda? Look at our Digestive System. Where do physical changes occur in this system? Where do chemical changes occur in this system?
Sticking with our "chocolate" theme this week, we read nonfiction texts about chocolate and used the information to inspire number stories. We then used cocoa beans to create arrays to help us solve our number stories! 3B explored physical changes of matter this week. Question: What happens when heat is applied to chocolate? With Valentine's Day tomorrow, we investigated all that we can learn about spelling from the word <love>. Check it out!
