As we inquire into systems that meet the needs of a community, we planned 3 different field trips to explore 3 different systems. Each house color attended a different field trip. That way, we have "experts" in each class. The three locations of our field trips were: the Tema Port - exploring the transportation system, WARA (West African Rescue Association) - exploring health systems, and a residential construction site - exploring the systems involved in constructing a housing development. Each field trip offered unique experiences for our Grade 3 students! I attended the field trip to WARA. Check out our photos!

This week was all about formulating questions! 3B geniuses took time exploring their topics through the lens of our PYP key concepts. They each chose 3 concepts that fit their topic. Then they wrote a question through the lens of each of those 3 concepts. Finally, they chose one question to focus on in their research.
This week at Genius Hour, 3B students showed their understanding of Genius Hour by completing the sentences "Genius Hour is.." and "Genius Hour isn't…" These will be our guidelines for Genius Hour this year. Then we chose our first topic to inquire into! We first brainstormed 9 topics we are interested in. We had to choose topics that we could inquire into for hours. We then diamond ranked them and chose our best ideas. We kicked off Genius Hour last week! We watched a Reading Rainbow about a story by author John Coy to prepare for his visit to LCS the following day. The video got us thinking about things that we want to learn how to do and make - so we brainstormed the following questions: What do you want to learn to do? What do you want to learn to make? What do you want to learn to create? What do you want to learn about? What do you want to learn to change? These questions got our brains thinking - tuning into the concept of Genius Hour. After lunch, as student entered the room, I played the following video: Next, I asked the students to inquire into "What is Genius Hour?" They worked at their tables, using laptops. They were instructed to type "Genius Hour" into their Google search engine. There, they could explore web, videos, news, and images. As they learned more, they were to create a mind map about what they found. Soon, they were gaining understanding of Genius Hour! It was amazing - I didn't have to do a 'sit and listen' to explain Genius Hour. They were able to gather the information from their research. Finally, they wrote any questions they still had about Genius Hour on post-its and we gathered together on the rug to answer the questions.
Next week, we will start brainstorming topics! |
