I love working with clusters because I get to know a small group students as I share my knowledge and passion. I led the photography cluster this year. Check out some of the awesome photos the Grade 3 photography cluster took!
Before Midterm break, Grade 3 participated in clusters. Each cluster gave the student an opportunity to explore an aspect of our central idea: Stories educate, entertain, and connect humans across culture. Each cluster spent two weeks inquiring into their art form and has it can be used to tell a story. The various clusters included traditional storytelling, around the campfire, digital storytelling, Comic Life, weaving, music and dance, and photography. We culminated the two weeks with a presentation of our learning at the Grade 3 Assembly on December 18th. 3B finished publishing their fiction stories last week! For this unit, we focused on the form of a story: beginning, middle, and end. We thought about the story elements: setting, characters, plot. We developed believable conflicts. We focused on "show, not tell" by thinking about how the character is feeling and what actions or details might show that feeling. Today, we celebrated our efforts with 3C in a joint publishing celebration. Students took time reading each others' stories and writing "glows and grows". Then they identified the conflict in a story and drew the scene using the details the student included in her/his story. And of course we shared some popcorn! This week, 3B is celebrating Random Acts of Kindness (R.A.K.) Check in throughout the week as we add new stories and photos about how we can spread kindness. Be kind to yourself. Be kind to others. Be kind to the environment. Check out more at: http://www.randomactsofkindness.org/ We watched the following video to get our minds thinking about Random Acts of Kindness. We used the visible thinking routine: I see...I think...I wonder... The week before Midterm break, I asked the students to bring in 7 objects that would fit into a small ziploc bag. They had no idea what the objects would be used for, and the anticipation built. On Friday, they all put their bags of objects into a basket and chose one at random. Then they opened up the bag and explored the objects. They used the objects to tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end. I was able to use this activity as a formative assessment: What is the form of a story? The students were entertained as they watched their objects come to life! |
